Metallica Bass Tone

Didn't know where exactly to post this so I put it here.

My question is how can I get a bass tone similar to that of the more recent Metallica?
I'm talking a distorted, low sounding, grinding bass like the one heard on Suicide & Redemption:

One thing I don't wanna do is drop tune, so I'd like to avoid that at the moment if at all possible.

I should probably add that I use DI into Pod Farm.

I'm trying to emulate the exact tone though. All I want to know is how to get that low sounding, grinding sound that he has. I've heard it plenty of times before but I have no idea where to start.

What I wanna know is if it's the distortion, the eq or some finger technique he uses, that's all.

Ampeg SVT amps sound like that when pushed. Find an SVT emulation, turn the low end up and the mids up. That should do it.
