Mastering?

I am planning a home studio.

I have the drums recorded great, bass and guitar done well.

But when I listen to albums I like, they seem to sound somewhat "Bigger", the sound seems to come at you from all areas of the headphones, not to mention that it is alot louder. Is this why bands do mastering?

Is mastering difficult? Is it possible to do world class mastering with your own equipment or does it have to be sent to specialists?

Cheers

That "big sound" starts a long time before the mastering engineer gets his paws on it.

Headphones? You really can't make spatial judgments while wearing headphones... You really shouldn't mix with headphones.

Yes, the "loud" part comes in during the mastering phase (although I'd argue that it's the least important part of the mastering phase).

It's as difficult or as simple as you make it and your level of experience allows. Although I might be a little biased, generally speaking, you send projects to a mastering specialist. Or *at least* another engineer. One of the biggest advantages is objectivity - You aren't going to have much objectivity with your own mixes.

On your next project Mix and Master it yourself!

With the same recording, have someone else mix it for you, (Make sure they know how,and let them know your desires) and send it off to get Mastered professionally. (You might get away with the mixing yourself, but step away from the project for a while.)

Come back and share your results with us!

That is what convinced me! :D
