Mastering Levels?

This may or may not be a completely stupid question... I have always used a similar technique which involves recording and mixing with my 4, 8, now 16 track, and then recording the output via my soundcard in a sound editor and editing and saving it that way. This seems fine, but I've always had a problem with the sound levels, mostly, how can I get all of my tracks to be the same level, and more difficultly, how can I get my track's levels to match those that other artists were mastered at? Right now I'm doing it by ear and its passable, but seems like more trouble than it should be... I mean, everyone must encounter this, so are there tools or tried and true methods to this besides ye old ear?
