Made a cool BINAURAL recording today...

Ploodpants is such a cool name!

You know it seems to me you wouldn't want the mics in your ear canal. Everyone's ear is different and what we all have in common is the sound as it arrives at the ear. Wouldn't it make sense to pick it up there? I have a friend that puts small mics on the earpieces of glasses and his recordings come out awfully good.
On another note Sennheiser 580s are almost as good as 600s and you can pick a pair of those up for about $150. The 600s replaced them and they are being discontinued. They used to be the audiophile standard 'till the 600s came out.
Lastly Headroom makes a line of awesome audiophile headphone amps that have a circuitry that simulates the sound of speakers so you don't get that "all in your head" effect. They're audiophile approved and start around $200

Thanks Bob! A friend of mine dubbed me that when I tried on my friend Maggie's raver "phat pants". I am 6'6" and she is normal height. Well, they came up just below my knees! Like flood pants, except they're phat.

Anyways... yes that's true about the 580's. They are mostly the same. From an inside source at Sennheiser, I know they sort the drivers out and the better matched pairs go into 600's and the rest into 580's. The 600 also has some carbon fiber parts and a more open back grille. The difference really is small, but I got mine on Ebay and they weren't that much more.

Gotta use an amp with the 580/600! They are high impedance (300 ohm) and need a lot of drive voltage.

As for the mics in the ear canals... I think they should still be in the canals because you want the mic to pick up the shadowing effect of the ear. When you play it back in phones, your ear shape doesn't affect the sound of the phones very much, as they are pointed stright at your ear. There are no directional cues to be had.

True, no two ears are alike, but they are similar enough I think. the effect is always best for the person doing the recording.

Just think... if binaural recording were popular, there would be good money to be made by having a statistically average head!

I wonder if it would be possible to make an accoustic mirror impulse in sound forge for the ear canal ? ? ?

It would be interesting. Then you could just take my recordings made with Nixon's head, run them through an "ear canal" accoustic mirror, and there you go.

It would be kind of tough though, I suppose. You'd have to find a way of recording white noise (or is it pink?) with them using exceptional monitors and zero accoustic embiance. Probably not practical, but I'm sure someone working in a sound lab could do it.

Binaural stuff is fun. You can even get away with just using a pillow or something to block the sound between the mics. I once got a pretty cool effect with 2 58's and a pillow. Of course omni's and a head probably give you better imaging.

They used to do a thing at Disneyland where you put on the headphones and it was a recording of a guy getting a hair cut. That was pretty freaky with the scissors clipping nearby and you'd swear the blow dryer was hitting your ear.

Interesting idea on porn, Chess. Why don't you BF nixon and let us hear it :D

Well, it's just a couple of mic stands with a mask on top of them with a couple mics sticking out.

I suppose I could perform felatio on the mics, or the stands themselves. I could probably make money selling that crap to sickos on the internet. :) ;)

Doooooood... That is some cool stuff... You totally feel like you're there... you can "hear" the wind, and almost "feel" which direction it's coming from.

Where did you have the mics placed again??? in your ears???

and what was that singing/talking in the background (rear right) at aboot 6:05??

WATYF

That would be the neighbors playing cards in their garage. They were about 3 1-acre lots away at the time. (1/2 mile maybe)

The traffic you hear in the distance is Highway 60, about 3 miles away and over a hill!

Yup... it's totally mind blowing!

5.1 surround seems like a toy in comparison.

The only thing missing is the tiny subconcious movements your head makes to discern front vs. rear. Some attempts to recreate that with DSP and gyroscope headphones have been made, but not very successfully.

I'll be doing some more recordings soon and I'll post them here...
