Mackie Onyx vs Allen & Heath Zed preamps

I've been planning on purchasing the onyx 1220i for home recording, but when I went to one of my local stores and the guy was trying to sell me an Allen and Heath mixer. Being unfamiliar I soaked it all up. He seemed to not understand I wouldn't be using it for live, plus he was a salesmen so thats why I want to see what you all thought. The A&Hs only offer USB in my price range ($700) which bothered me, but I could get a whole lot more channels. For the same price as the onyx I could get the ZED-24. In the end though, I simply want the best sound. He kept going on how you could jump on the A&H and it be fine, but its just going to sit on my desk... not jumping.
So what do you think in terms of sound quality of the pres, onyx or A&H or something different altogether?

Thanks!

Other converters?

I own the zed-24 and i've used the usb recording and i absolutely hated the sound of the converters i thought it was God awful, but i would definitely buy the zed-24 if you will be using external converters or an interface because i like how the pre's sound. But! if you are buying this for use as an interface i would say to get the mackie because u get more i/o with firewire, i Do not know much about the mackie but this is just my opinion.
