i've got a mac mini with a 1.42 GHz G4 processor. I've put a 1GB stick of memory in it. My question is how much of a difference will i notice if i get a faster hard drive. Any suggestions? What else can i do (other than buying a new comp.) to make this little guy its best.

a faster hard drive is always a good thing. i think mini's have 5200 rpm laptop units. 7600 rpm is a big improvement. an external hd could be your best option.

G4, Fast enough???

1GB of memory is ok but the mini may be a bit slower for bigger recording setups. I sometimes use a G4 powerbook for portable recording at 1.5GHz and it can be slow. It depends on how big you want your setup to get.

It's 5600 and 7200, and yes, it will make a big difference. An external will be faster, but with higher latency. Whether this matters depends on how well written the DAW is. Since you don't mention which one you're using, it's hard to give advice in that area.
