M-Audio USB Keyboard: How to get new instruments?

Ok so I have this hooked up to my computer and from what I understand:

You use your recording software (Acid Pro in my case) to select which instruments it will play right?

My question is if I wanted to buy some third-party instruments - what format am I looking for?

Acid calls they "SoftSynths" but Ive also read about "VSTi" - what exactly am I looking for as far as the format of these virtual instruments is concerned?
 
In the manual for Acid Pro there will most likely be a section devoted to Plugins. It will tell you what types are supported, it should accept more than one plugin format. I've never used Acid but if its like most other DAWs it will have a selection of instruments and effects built in. Search for free plugins too, theres loads about.
