m- audio problem

hey guys, i have a bit of an issue.

I just bought a set of m audio studiophile dx4 speakers and i have an issue with them already. I hear a loud hum that lasts for about 3-5 seconds, and then gets louder and stays at that volume until i turn them off.

I have the original power cable, so that's not the issue.
This has occured everytime I've used them on 3 different electrical outlets.
I have some cheap speaker wire in between the two speakers, but when powering up the main speaker that the power cord plugs into, that one will do it without the speaker wire attached.
Mid boost switch has no effect.
No indication of any input from a component playing through them, even when hooked up.

any thoughts?

Is the hum coming from the actual speaker, or from inside the speaker cabinet?

the actual speaker, they move as if that was the sound being input.

A pic on the net gives me the impression the back could easily be opened. Maybe you could attach the amp to a different speaker and connect another amp to the unpowered speaker.

The power connector gives me the impression that the power supply is inside the unit. Is that so? If not, maybe you could swap out the power supply.

You might be looking at a pair of unpowered speakers going forward.
