M-Audio Firewire Audiophile, Firefox + Media Player problem?!!

Ok, this is a really strange problem that I'm having a really hard time understanding. Here's my setup:

-Acer laptop with AMD Sempron 3000+ processor
-512 MB DDR
-80 GB HDD in 2 partitions (one for operating system, other only for audio)
-250 GB USB 2.0 HDD
-Lacie PCMCIA Firewire/USB 2.0 interface
-Windows XP

Now, I have a small recording studio with a whole different setup, but that is back in Costa Rica. I'm living in Rome now and wanted to be able to record some of my guitar ideas on my laptop so I got myself the M-Audio Firewire Audiophile a few days ago. I've installed the drivers and then hooked up the interface. So far no problems. I then open windows media player, load an mp3 and music comes from my speakers. I then decide to open my firefox browser and then the audio dissapeared. Reboot, retry, same thing. I thought it could be a problem with opening two applications at once so I've tried other possibilities:
Media Player + VLC player + IE 7 no problem
Winamp + Media Player + IE 7 no problem
Quicktime + Media Player + Excel no problem

Any time I open Firefox with another audio program playing, the audio stops and no matter what I do, it wont come back until I reboot.

What could be the problem?!?!?! Any suggestions?!
