M-Audio Fast Track + Condenser Mic = very low monitoring volume

So I just got the M-Audio Fast Track today and was messing around with it with my condenser microphone.

It records at fine volumes, but I have it hooked up via USB and have it monitoring from my software and I find that the volume in my headphones for the microphone is very low compared to how high it is recording.

I can somewhat make up for this by turning up the volume on the bus on the software but it only lets me up it 12db and even then I would prefer it louder.

I feel like something isnt right because I shouldnt have to do that.

Any tips on this other than just jacking up the volume on my monitor input bus on my software?

Also, I have it panned to 51% R so that I can hear it out of both left and right headphones -

Is this the correct method?

Does this have anything to do with my volume issues?

What software are you using. Sounding like you are recording a mono source to a stereo track. Record to a mono track may get what you are looking for.
