Loose Time?

A friend of mine recently tried to, due to a lack of tracks live, use three different devices (a Tascam 246 4 track, a JVC TD-W318 consumer casette deck and a computer) to record 6 tracks of audio. The Tascam and the computer's audio lines up perfectly, however, neither lines up with the JVC. It seems to be off by roughly .35/second. As long as they are recorded and played back on the same devices (no pitch controls engaged) shouldn't they line up? Anyone have any idea why this isnt working?

It's not working because the mechnical motors of the analog machines simply aren't precise enough to avoid some drift. The little that you do have is surprising - it could be far worse!

The only way around this at this point is to bounce your analog tracks over to the computer and manually nudge them so that they are in sync.... laborious but eventually you will get it.

The way you typically sync an analog machine is via a SMPTE stripe on the tape - then the computer can sync to the mechanical motor's speed variations and the tracks stay in sync. You can't do this after the fact though........
