Live recording

hey all. My band is doing a demo sometime in about a week.

It is not going to be anything crazy, and we are doing it live, since we dont have a bunch of time to sit down and do track by track.

anyhow, supposedly the guy who is recording us knows his stuff, but I havent even talked to him yet.
can anyone recommend mic settings/distances from cabs and whatnot?

I want to try to make the best damn demo possible.

thanks!

by the way - we play mostly metal and it's loud.

If it's possible to track everything but vocals and overdub those after, it may work out best.

How many channels do you have to work with? I'd try and close mic everything (guitars, bass, drums) and take the guitar and bass signals in direct as well. The bass you can mix with the mic'd signal. The clean guitar tracks you could re-amp later if needed.

You'll get the most bleed from the drum overheads, room mic, and vocal mics (if used). If you need to track vocals, try and monitor over headphones rather than the PA if you can. You can use gobos at the guitar cabinets to try and reduce bleed. Also, turn things down if you can still get decent sounds and do your monitoring over headphones.
