Live backup track tempo

Hello all.
Okay, here's what I'm trying to do...
I am trying to figure out how to have prerecorded backup tracks for live performance that I can adjust the tempo of with some kind of tap tempo pedal. I was assuming you'd do that with midi....
I was wondering if anyone knew about any hardware and/or software that is used for this kinda of thing....
I'm running Mac OS 10.3 with a MOTU 896 for audio output.

Ableton's Live is the first think that springs to my mind. I think you can even do what you're asking directly into the program if you set it up correctly.

Of course this won't be instant or easy - there's a pretty steep learning curve and you'll need to factor in both the price of the program itself and the time it will take to learn to use it effectively.

But it IS out there...
