Lessons from VH1: "Behind The Music"

As a recording person, I often like to watch the
VH1 TV program - "Behind The Music". It is a great
way to learn how accomplished national artists got
started, used techniques locally, how they slaved at
it for years, came from humble roots, got recognized,
got shafted by their record company, lost it all to those
they trusted, sprung back, and much more. - If you
want some marketing tips
watch some of these interviews.

Try it.....

I especially liked the Def Leppard One.... What a view you get all in the time of an hour....

-Band Forms
-Drunk guitar Player Leaves
-Other Drunk Guitar Player stays
-Hire a relatively dry guitar player to do the bulk of the work
-Meet a guy named Mutt who makes you sound alot better
-Drummer loses Arm
-Arm is re-attached
-Arm gets infected
-Drummer loses arm again
-Make awesome 80's pop rock album using Drum machines (Hyst.)
-Drummer learns to play on electro-drums, joins tour
-Come off tour write a bunch of awsome songs
-Ready to record new album, guitar player croaks
-The Dry guitar Player plays all parts on new album.....
-Hire another guitar guy, Alot uglier than dead guy
-Another tour
-Play 80's hair metal on MTV awards same month grunge Breaks
-Dissapear for 3 years
-Come out With alternative album
-New album sells 38 copies
-Dissapear again for 4 years
-Make new album sound like 80's hair rock again, sales are huge
-Tour arenas
-Small break
-Work on New album........................
-(To be continued)

Oh, I forgot....

Between the 4 year dissapearence and writing the new album...
-Cut hair to look like 'Stylish' Bon Jovi Lead singer
-Grow Hair Back to Heavy Metal style

LOL that was a great summary VOX

although, The Ozzy one is pretty funny too .....He's always good for a laugh that guy

Chuck Keep watching behind the music and you will surely become a recording hero! :D

Don't be stupid - watch it and learn

In one hour you can learn:

- How unknown artist made it to the top ?
- How national artists dress for performance.
- Learn who the few were that influenced many
- See the best lighting techniques going
- What is dynamic range in a performance
- Learn what equipment the big shows use.
* The big boys ONLY use what works, so don't be stupid, tune in...
:)

CHUCK there isn't even one behind the music that i've not seen Ive seen them all and there great,,,,,,,,,except I watch for entertainment purpose only.....not to see how stars dress for the big performance(lol that must be a joke) or how many casting couches they had to be subjected to in order to make it to the top...Wake up dude! you can't learn anything from behind the music......except for maybe don't use drugs, don't sleep with band members, what color lipstick poison wears, what equipment and lighting techiques were used in 1985, and that Tom waits influenced everyone...:D

If I am not mistaken, the very first show was about Milli Vanilli. Didnt learn a whole lot from that one.

I have seen several BTM episodes, and enjoyed it greatly. I saw one on "Poison" recently, and I didnt even know who they were, but I still liked the show.

- How unknown artist made it to the top ?

Many were lucky, must be 10,000 bands as good as Poison.

* The big boys ONLY use what works, so don't be stupid, tune in...
Willie Nelson uses a guitar with a crack as big as a baseball.

The show is enjoyable, but lets face it: it is far more interested in drugs, death and termoil than musical talent and hard work. Does the musical knowledge of Leif Garrett really help anyone?

Davidk - you just took a shot at Leif Garrett (pronounced "Laif" by the way).

This is an inexusable act on your part. You have just been taken off of every christmas list I will ever make.

Dear god man, what could you have been thinking?

P.S. Thanks for your kind words in the mp3 clinic a while back - I did read them - and yes, I still plan to record my special tribute to you!

Bradley, Leif's little sister was on My three sons. She was Dody, the little brat who made the show jump the shark and gave me horrible nightmares, scarring me forever. I think when I saw her for the first time, I thought "Holy Shit, that is the ugliest girl I have ever seen. I think I will devote my life to learning the violin so I never date anything as hideous".

So that's why I dont like Leif: if it wasnt for his sister, I would have a real job, real money, and I wouldnt have to play with Donny Osmond or Barry Manilow (my next gig) again.

We all of Course know what a musical giant Leif is, and from what I saw on the show, he turned out to be a fine, upstanding model citizen. Too bad he paralyzed his best friend, but hey, things happen..

Perhaps, someday soon: Behind the music: BRAD

" Brad rises to the top of the Porn Music Profession, as legal troubles and obsessions with Steaming make the tabloids...

Perhaps in a future episode:

Behind the Music: Chuckschwandt

" ChuckSchwandt rises from obscurity to superstardom on the western North Carolina Music Scene, and battles competition (Opie and the pussycats), fast women (Aunt Bea), legal hassles (Barney), Big Hair troubles (floyd), parties with the IN Crowd (Otis), and finally falls from Grace (Mayberry RFD, Ken Berry)."

I lived in NC for many years:p

I like the show, but don't see how it will help breakin into the industry since there is no 1 specific way

Shania

I found her to be real phoney in he Behind the Music thing.... She reminds me of Kathy Lee Gifford or Rosie O'Donnel... Acts all clean and proper, but you get a feeling that some devilish shit is going on behind those eyes....

Sort of Like Kathy Lee, Mrs God loving mother of the year, who ran a sweatshop for financial gain....

I love Shania's music and Im a huge Mutt Lange fan... But I just get a phoney vibe from her....

Lesson: anybody can be musically successful

Hi VOXVENDOR,

VH1 is very revealing about people's lives.
When you watch them get interviewed, you
get a sense of their true character. - I always
wondered why Shania stands like a football
quaterback when she sings - ha ha!
Interesting to realize that all kinds of people
can be musically successful. Hey thanks for
another great lesson from VH1.

Chuck

:)

what up chucker,

She does stand like a football player when she sings....lol ..or like she's taking a dump while standing, which ever you prefer....:D

yo, vox that Shania Wench does give off that vibe doesn't she....she's all prissy and proper but you get that feeling that underneath that farce she would rip out your heart and eat it, cut your throat, or cyphen the last drop of life from you , if that's what it took to keep her career going............And then after all that she'd probably say something like.....

"Damn, I broke a nail" :D
