On his most recent albums (past 5 years) the vocal sounds as if he is singing right on the mic. However most vocal miking lessons/threads/videos suggest at least 6" to reduce the proximity effect (especially in home studio setups)
Or are the vocals treated to heavy compression?
My voice is similar in some respects and I love the sound of those records. Especially 'you want it darker' and 'popular problems'
I'd imagine his vocal would of gone through a hi end mic and preamp too
