The first Kaoss pad was a cool idea, but it seemed like Korg was just testing the concept of a real-time audio processor. When it proved to be a big sucess they put some actual time and thought into the design and came up with the KP2. In terms of midi contol, tap tempo and on-board memory it's superior in every way to the original. If you're considering getting one at all I strongly recommend getting the KP2. You will find some original Kaoss pads for small $ on eBay and such but don't be roped into the inferior version, because the first time you hear a KP2 in action you'll want to punt the one you got for cheap.
