Korg D-1600 question about mixdown.

I need some info from any seasoned Korg D-1600 user.
When you're mixing down to two tracks,so you can master a song to cd,Korg tells you to mix down to tracks 1 and 2.
This would be fine if there was no program material there, but in this case there is,as it would be in most cases.
You can't monitor what's on tracks 1 and 2 because you're in record mode.and if you record over tracks 1 and 2 they'd be essentially gone.
Virtual tracks aren't the answer either, because you still cant record the program material that's resident on tracks 1 and 2,nor can you monitor it.
I've got to believe that I'm doing something wrong, because I find it hard to fathom that you shouldn't record on tracks 1 and 2.
Any light on this evil bizarreness?
Thanks,
Zampuuji
