Just bought a DBX 286a

Well, I am aware that this is not the best thing in the world, but I snapped it up on ebay for about $75 so I figure I cant go wrong! ;)

My question is... has anybody used one of these things to apply light compression while tracking?

Alternately, anybody still using one of these beasts on vocals period?

Got also two of them and mainly use them for vocals and apply light compression. I usually set Density to max and then tweak Drive button so the gain reduction shows about 3-6 dB.
 
I have one. Works just fine on vocals. I'd grab another one if the price was right- but frankly, I think $75 is too high. Oh, wait, you already bought it. It will do what you want it to do. You will get some good use from it.
