Is running the signal through a preamp LAST bad?

I mean after compression, possible effects, etc, is it bad to put run it through a pre last?

I was planning on plugging my mics into my patch bay, which in turn would send it through compression, then to effects, then on and on and then finally to my mixer w/pre amps.

Would it be better to run the signal direct into my mixer with preamps, and then use the AUX side chains and what not to run it into my patch bay?

You need to run your mics through a preamp first in order to get the signal up to line level, then you can run it through the compressors, etc. You would not use aux sends, you'd use the inserts.
