Is it safe?

I just recieved my tascam porta 02 and I was wanting to
record from my Casio keyboard. The casio only has midi
or headphone out and the porta 02 manual says not to use
headphone out, that it could hurt the machine. I tried it
before I read the manual and it worked fine, but is it not
a good idea? How 'bout through a little source box? Is
using a Alesis Nanoverb or a Samson mixer better.
Thanks, jvt

jvt,

I think they're just trying to caution you against overdriving the input of the Tascam. If you have a choice of line in or mic in, use line. It will work, although it wont be optimum sound guality. It sounds like your Casio just wasn't designed to be plugged into external amplification. Plugging it into a mixer or effects processor poses the same problem as plugging it into the Tascam. Start with a low volume setting on the casio and a a medium level setting on the Tascam, and increase the output of the keyboard slowly until you get an acceptable level of sound with minimum noise.
