is a trade-in/trade-down ever worth it?

i've got an american standard tele in pretty good shape (5 years old, paid $950CAD new). the guy at the guitar shop says he'll give me $650CAD on a trade and i am thinking about swapping for a japanese made fender jaguar or jazzmaster, something with a wammy bar for playing surf guitar licks. am i the biggest idiot around? am i giving up a quality made, good intonation/action/hardware guitar for a second rate fender that will go out of tune faster than i can say 'dick dale'?
