Greetings, currently calibrating the meters on my Tascam M-216 mixing board, so I downloaded a tone oscillator on my iPhone.

Unfortunately, the app simply states "db" on the volume control. I just want to make sure that db in this case indeed means "dbfs". That is how the audio output from an iPhone would be measured, correct?

Thanks!

That depends... Does it have a negative sign next to the number? If it doesn't, then probably not.

Unless, your oscillator app is very clever and takes over your phone (which I doubt) I suspect it's not actually calibrated in any way and will depend on how you set the output level on your phone.

The volume on the app goes from -75 "dB" to 0 "dB". Since the number can only be negative or 0, this is what led me to believe that the "dB" was actually dBfs.

It's a real problem with these apps - many simply have a "volume" slider with no indication of dBu or dBfs. I'm not sure how they expect you to properly use a tone oscillator if you don't know what volume you pumping through your system...

Maybe you could email the developer and ask them directly?
