interface hooked up, but no sound

my alesis io 26 came with cubase le 4, but its not required for the alesis to work. it also has a direct monitoring program for me to use, but im getting no sound out of anything. i set the interface as my default playback and recording device and hooked my speakers up via 1/4 plugin, into the interface's headphone 1 slot. i bring up itunes for example, and i have a song playing and on the "sound" box on windows where it shows all the different playback devices, it shows the level meter is working on my interface device. BUT, the lights do not show up on the interface and there is no sound coming from my speakers. what am i doing wrong?

im using Windows vista 32 bit.
 
Try some obvious things first:

Have you got the volume levels on the Alesis about half way?

Have you got the 'mix blend' control set to 'computer' (or at least half way)?

Have you tried headphones in the headphone socket?
 
More basic: Did you turn on the ins and outs to the soundcard in Cubase???
(It doesn't do it automatically.)

F5 if I remember right....
