Interested in getting started

Hello. Ok I am fairly new to this, so any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Firstly, I am interested in buying a laptop (probably a Sony), for recording/mixing purposes how well do they compare to desktops? Second, is there any special hardware I will need? i.e sound cards, harddrive, etc. Also what software would you suggest? Ive heard good things about Pro-Tools but am afraid it's a little outside my price range. Thanks again!

If you're getting a laptop, get one with a 7200rpm drive if possible, 5400 as a minimum. 1GB of ram will keep you out of trouble. Get the 'Mobile' chip which are quieter.

You'll also need a firewire soundcard. If you're recording drums, you'll want at least 4 mics/preamps, so check out the Presonus Firepod which comes with 8 preamps.

The firepod/laptop is the basis of my mobile rig. Works well
