Back in '87 I had two mics: an SM57 and a Sennheiser MD441U. Did a good job at most things.

Agreed. At least the stock 57, anyway.

My choice would definitely be the Audix i5. I use it on pretty much everything: snare miking, toms, guitar cabs, acoustic guitar and even vocals. Always reproduces an accurate sound.
