the black wire in a pup is the negative right? I got a new pup from the UK, and just wanted to make sure that's a uniform assumption everywhere.
 
I usually figure this out immediately after I solder it up backwards and plug the guitar in. Good luck.
 
It depends on the manufacturer, and the type of pickup. On single coils, that is usually the case. On 4-wire humubkers, the black is usually the hot.

Look at the instructions that came with the pickup.

I did, but it doesn't specify...and it's in B&W, and I'm not very proficient at fully understanding schematics. It's a handmade humbucker from Britain called The War Pig (Bareknuckle pups). I guess I'll just e-mail and ask them. Thanks for the info though. I'll post some clips as soon as I finish modding the beast.
