i need a new ax, suggest one!

Ummmm... If you're going to buy a cheap-O guitar and then upgrade the pick-ups, why not just buy a decent guitar? Pickups are 50-100 bucks a pop so, you could invest that into a better "all-around" guitar. One thing I've learned, when you cut corners in your gear, you cut corners in your sound.

Food for thought,
Chris

How about a Danelectro DC3? Those are going for around $250 used.

that crossed my mind too. i'm actually considering getting a couple guitars instead of one. provided that i can stay with the more inexpensive ones. a strat would be an option too, like the agile 802. it's not really a guitar i like to play, but it usually records well.

as for cutting corners, i really wouldn't be able to get a couple of great guitars with the money i have. i'm interested in getting a couple of decent axes for different flavours, as i already have a main guitar that i love, which is my rick. i'd love to play it in every song and every overdub, but it doesn't work that way.

i need a (or a couple of) new guitar now, because i'm already recording a new cd. renting (or borrowing) is not an option. upgrading the pu's is something that would be nice in case i got a good guitar that might benefit a lot from a pu change. there are better pickups than epiphone's stock ones in the market for much less than $100.

Switch

Try a Switch (www.switchmusic.com). I have a vintage Strat and am completely satisfied with it, but I bought a Switch because it is so crazy. They are completely synthetic, which means they are one piece. Incredible resonance and even better tone. Check them out if they are in your area. They have a copy (Tone...NOT LOOKS!) of about every major guitar out there.

Ibanez...any RG series...the necks and bodies are all very nice and consistent but the lower end units have run of the mill "ok" pups. They're kind of a hot rod guitar but with a good selection of replacement pickups they make great instruments. A good value in my book. I have an old 270 and a 320 (I think) which make great players and greatly improved when I replaced the pick ups.

switch guitars = hurt my eyes :D
ibanez rg = shredder axes, i could never let anyone see me playing one of those in public. i'm sure they work for some types of music, but not for what i play.

i found out that i can get the ibanez artcore asf75t for less than the epiphone alleykat and the agiles. prices are (wait for it) $793 for the alleykat, $644 for the artcore, and god know how much for the agiles, probably $229 + $250 shipping + 60% import taxes. ouch!

Oh...to hell with it...take out a loan and get an Ernie Ball Music Man JPM, 7-string with piezo pups, the inlays matching head, the works. :D

Right now, as I'm holding it, plugged into my dual recto, it's simply sceaming play me more! We live to shred (even in public) Oh wait, maybe that's my wife screaming NO more. :D

I'll now switch my pups to the neck and piezo, put on a clean channel, turn on my blue light, put on my sun glasses and play a little sumptin slow and low in B flat. That should tame the savage beast.

:)

As we already have blown your budget...

If you "need more guitars not to bore your audience to death" I'd consider the Line 6 Variax. Even if it is "new technology" and some people don't think it's the "real thing". Do your homework however. There's been some (rare - but still) problems with it and you should be aware of that.

I certainly don't regret buying mine. It's my workhorse in the studio. Actually I'm thinking of it more like the ultimate mistress. I've got the guitar I love, but my Variax gives me one h*ll of a ride...

i don't even know what a variax is, but now that you mentioned it, i'll see what i can find out about it. but i'm pretty much settled on the artcore. for now.:D

i checked with my local dealer, and i might be able to get an epiphone alleykat for a decent price.:)
i'd rather get a wildkat, but they're sold out here, and they don't know when they'll have it. i wonder how the alleykat sounds. anyone here tried one?
i wonder how easy it would be to find suitable upgrade pick ups?

Postal:
I had an Alleykat, and quite liked it. The mini-New Yorker humbucker in the neck position had a great tone, especially for jazzy stuff. The bridge pickup sounded sort of generic; not a bad sound by any means, but not especially noteworthy, either.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the P-90 pickup, so I would suggest either the Casino or the Wildkat. P-90s have a great retro edge, kind of halfway between a singlecoil and a humbucker sounds, and they seem to be more sensitive to different pick attacks and styles of play. For $400 you can get a Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker--cedar solidbody with a single P-90--about as simple as you can get--but the piphone Casino has the whole Beatles vibe, and the neck joins the body at the 15th fret or something, so it's got this unique "short" feel that's totally fun to play. I think you can get one for $600 retail, but I've seen new ones for $500 online.

i'd really like to have a guitar with mini-humbuckers. i hear they have a lot of high end, which is something i like and need most of the time. of course i also want guitars that sound different than the ones i already have, so i'm probably better off right now with a hb, p-90 or lipstick model.

the store guy says they're run out of wildkats, and the casino is over $1000. i wonder why? so i've pretty much decided on the artcore. the les paul would be an interesting choice too, if i can get it for a decent price.

Listen especially to Jeff Miller. And you'll hear that the Variax is not an obstacle...

thanks for the links.:)
i'll look into the variax, for sure.
the main obstacle is the price though. i can get them here, but it's $1,900.

I recently bought a "Satin" Strat at Guitar Center for $199. I like it alot. Basically a mim standard strat with matte finish. I was told they were being discontinued. Cheap, easily upgraded, and plays great. Check them out.

Ouch, don't do it! Yet! We pay a little bit "too much" in Sweden also compared to USA, but nothing like that.

yeah, it's way overpriced.
i usually pay the outrageous prices when i get a set-neck guitar, because with shipping and taxes it's usually more expensive to order it directly from abroad.
when it's a bolt-on, i have some friend in the u.s. get it for me, and send it unassembled via usps, which is a LOT cheaper. and i usually lie when i state the value for customs, which i know is illegal, but charging 60% taxes should be illegal too. it's simply ridiculous what we have to go through down here to get decent gear.
