I can hear it but I can't record it! Help!!

I've got a Turtle Beach Montego I card in a fairly beefy system.

The line input of the card works FINE-- I can run a tape deck into it and it gets through to the PC speakers without a problem.

I've tried several different recording softwares to try to record WAV files, including WIN 98 Sound Recorder, Cool Edit and WAVE Repair, and all I get is silence.

Am I missing something fundamental?
