How well do you think the pros did at mixing these live takes??? Click the link below to hear a few sound clips from my band's recent interview at the Riverwind Casino in Norman, OK. We did a short interview and played a few songs that were aired on www.oklatravelnet.com. I cut out our sound clips and put them on a soundclick page. In my opinion I don't think they did a very good job at mixing this. Not terrible for a recording of a live performance, but it wasn't like it was in some shitty venue... it was at a nice casino with no audience, and the sound was recorded straight off the board. I think they could have done a much better job.

Also, if you want to hear what these songs sound like as recorded in a real studio for our upcoming album, check out our myspace page below. That might give you something to compare it to. Later.

Really, nobody has anything to say??? I was really curious what you guys thought of this mix. I guess it's the first time I've really done anything like that, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was wondering if this guy did a really good job considering the circumstances and I'm just being picky, or if it really is a sub-par mix job.

Its pretty good. Its not the best but sounds good I get a real big live presence ad I like that.

It sounds to me like something recorded with a single stereo-pair from a distance, and left unmastered.
Could've been better if they miced everything on the scene...

They could have run a separate board for your mix. Live sound takes a whole different aspect on how it's mixed. You have to account for the room, the monitors, et al. A mix coming off a live sound board is pretty weak.

I've done it for my church. The live sound was great, everyone was happy. But the recording of the session was less than stellar.

lol. :D
I can hear close mics were used on most instruments.
I think it sounds good for a live recording/mix. The MP3 is terrible quality though or is this the bad mix quality you are talking about 89gtsleeper?

What is it you don't like about your live mixes?

You have to remember that a live mix coming off the board is the difference between the wash coming off the stage and the effect of the crossovers and EQ's. I'm actually suprised it's that good. When doing metal, you normally don't get much guitar in the mix because it's so loud coming off the stage and the soundguy doesn't need to put much in the PA. Meanwhile keys and vocals are insanely loud and the drums are thin and weak.

The guy was mixing it for the room, not for the tape.

Exactly what I thought before I even read this. Exactly what I think.

Dude you got ripped off. i would demand a refund.

Funny how everyone with some equipment now a days calls themselves Professional. To me a pro uses one thing that cant be plugged in or purchased. EARS.

Next time I would ask for some recording samples of past artist before committing to any one sound Professional

ok, well the mp3 quality is terrible I know that... not my fault btw. I was just curious of opinions of the mix itself. We didn't pay anything for this. This news show contacted us and said they would feature our band on their news broadcast. We just came down, did a quick interview, then played a few songs and this is what played on the news. We did this simply for some free exposure to a different audience. There were no mains for the p.a. Just a few monitors on stage that only had vocals running through them. Everything except the bass was close mic'd. The bass was DI. I don't believe there wre any room mics. No audience was there or any kind of other noise to muddy up the sound. The guy mixing this was mixing with headphones on... I think some Sennheiser 280s. The board was like a 24 channel Mackie. That's about all I know. Having said that, I think he could have done better. He really rushed through the sound check, and we had spare time...

Given enough trial and error takes, he could have gotten a great mix. But as a one off, mix to two-track thing, it isn't bad.

My band have done a few live recordings just like this.
Here is a recording by a "proffesional" company of us if you care to listen to the quality of this.

Excuse our very sloppy playing, this was recorded a good while back. :)

Talk about looking the proverbial gift horse in the mouth.

You should be ecstatic that it turned out this good. Are you saying that the news people recorded this? Ummm, there forte is THE NEWS, not mixing rock shows. Fidelity is not part of the news game, not that some dont have competent audio engineers on staff. I'm surprised they didnt have a camera man just handholding a mic. Regardless, they tried to give you exposure, be grateful for that.

Oh I am definitely grateful for this. If it were the news crew doing this, I would totally agree with you. However, this was done at the casino, and the sound guy for this was the casino's sound guy, not the one from the news channel. There was a bar on the other side of this room, so they definitely have bands play here all the time, and I'd guess they record periodically because I have seen other local acts have live cuts from this casino.
