How to use a mic-preamp (or how to get decent sound from a Behringer mixer.

I have a Behringer 1604 and it seems like the recorded sounds are real tinny. I also have an old Radio Shack DJ type mixer/fader that has no eq. This old POS mixer actually sounds way better/warmer than the Behringer. Can I plug a mic into the Radio Shack mixer then into the Behringer? Or, should it be input to a strip ? How does one hook up a mic pre-amp? Mic>Preamp>mixing console????
