How do I record from a DAT onto my machine ? I have a DAT player and a hi8 machine but no DAT drive. What cable, where ? Please help ?

Spamming a question on a BBS is not looked upon to well.

You need a sound card with digital I/O that matches the digital I/O of your DAT player. The cable that you will use depends upon the type of digital I/O you have.

The two standards are S/PDIF and AES/EBU. S/PDIF uses either a unbalanced coax cable, usually with RCA connectors, or a optical cable with TOSLink connectors.

AES/EBU uses a balanced coax cable, with XLR connectors.

You will need software to record with. There is dozens of options. Which you choose depends upon what you want to do with the music once it is on the hard drive. If mastering is your aim, Wavelab is probably the best PC based mastering software available.

There is a new unit out too. Called a DATport from Opcode. It will take digital in spdif and output through USB. If you have USB on connections on your PC.
