How to detemine actual decibel rating of monitoring environment?

Well I've been working on a mix for the last couple weeks or so and I wasn't able to get anywhere. every mix I did something turned out too loud once I got it in the car. There was no balance. With the volume that loud; I couldn't hear if anything was TOO loud. Once I dropped it down to about HALF of the "recommended" volume, I got a perfectly balanced car mix. YMMV.
