how many compressors do I need?

I just purchased a Digi 002 and a Digimax LT. This gives me a total of 12 mic preamps. I will be micing drums, bass, guitar and vocals. I'm very new to this and I'm not sure how I use compression? Will I need a number of compressors to run through while tracking, or can I use 1 or 2 and add the compression a track at a time after tracking?

It can be done with or without. The advantage to compression while tracking (IMO) is that you can limit potential peaks and bring the overall track gain up without worrying about clipping. Generally, you're not going to want to compress, just limit.

I would limit the kick, snare, and vocal mics, and not worry about overheads or guitar amps, unless you have a bottomless wallet :)
 
Id certainly use plugins after the fact....if you do need some limiting to track with, the Behringer Multicom gives you 4 channels of good limiting for $99.....
