Chinese and other countries make cheap mikes.
The question is: Can you make a mike as good as them yourself?
If so, could you save any money?
I am sure you could get the features you want if you did this.
EG found a circuit for an MS stereo mike using 3 mike capsules.
Unless the quality of inexpensive capsules is really bad this would be attractive to build.
Also, I could see it being useful to build a custom PZM pressure zone mike.

So does anyone have an idea about how the quality might compare?

I am guessing the savings are minimal but can't be sure. Certainly I could add pads, low cut, and other features that are useful. Also I could build specialty mikes that I might not buy.

Is it worth the effort?

You can build microphones of professional quality with capsules like Pana WM61A, WM55, Transound TS160A and O. Also the Transound 14mms aren't bad.

If you know where to get the right parts, and know what you're doing and looking for, you can build mics waaaaay better than any cheap Chinese made microphone.
