How do you sample things effectively and efficiently?

Typically, I tend to make my own melodies when producing but will occasionally play around with random samples. I usually use something like "song surgeon" to quickly adjust the bpm/key, and then throw it into my DAW. Does anybody else use something while sampling, additionally to the DAW of choice?
