Hot computer

Hi everyone. I am running a 1.33 Ghz AMD thunderbird and I am having a real problem trying to keep it cool. I have to leave the case open just to give it enough ventilation. With the case open the CPU fan is extremely loud.

There's all sorts of fans available for PCs. Specifically for the CPU, for the case, et.al. Your local computer zooper ztore should have a variety to choose from.

AMD CPUs run extremely hot, and it's imperative that they are properly cooled. AMD's chips are inexpensive, powerful, and very, very dangerous.

Look here to see what happens if your CPU fan fails:

Second, leaving your computer's case open is not the way to increase airflow - you are actually decreasing your airflow by doing this. The inside of your case acts as a windtunnel, insuring that air goes where it's supposed to. So put that case cover back on, and get yourself a case fan.

The case fan goes on the bottom of the front of the case. Fresh air blows in through the front and bottom, over your CPU, and out through the power supply, at the back and top of the case. Make sure you point your case fan in the correct direction - you want air blowing in, not out.

Third, replace your CPU's fan and heatsink. With fast Athlon processors, using the included HSF is really not a good idea.

Check out a comparison of 46 HSFs here:

Good luck keeping your monster cool!
