my friend just got a Behringer mixing board, and is trying to hook it up to her computer. She cant just hook it straight in, right? she needs some sorta outboard gear and a badass soundcard, right?

Soundcard yes. Outboard gear, helpful but probably not necessary, unless said outboard gear is microphones and cables.

ok...
well, so she can use say.....1/4" to 1/8 to run the board to her comp?

and what kind of soundcard would be good?

she has some MAC that she got like a year ago.....

Do a search on "sound cards". There's lots of good information on the site. It would be best to get a card with balanced input connections (1/4-in or XLR); in the quantity equivalent to the number of channels you want to be able to record simultaneously. You could also look into an external firewire interface rather than PCI soundcard.

Lots of options.....
Does your friend have a PowerBook or iBook, or a desktop machine?
FireWire?
Any preference between a PCI card that goes inside the machine, or an external interface?
How many inputs/outputs does she think she'll need?
Will she be using condenser mics?
