Help with Bit resolution and Sample rate

Hi all, I'm sure this has been coverd before, but Im unable to find an exact answer by searching. I use AA 1.5, and just started using a Presonus Inspire. Im now able to step up to 24 bit recording. My question is, does 24 bit always have to be 24/96? 16/44.1 ? etc.., or can you have say 24 bit at 44.1. , or at 48 or 88,.Trying to cut back on HD space and computer rescoures. Thanks
 
24-bit give you (MUCH) better resolution than 16-bit.

After that, working at your target rate is normally just fine (CD - 44.1kHz, VDO - 48kHz).
 
Try recording some tracks at different bit depths and sampling rates and see if you can hear the difference. You might be surprised.

Thanks for the info. Those sites were great. Lots of info. Started recording our 2nd cd yesterday. Spent 7 hours in the studio and tracked a whole 2 songs. Long process, but fun.
