help with adat lightpipe connection

i have an m-audio project mix I/O and i would like to purchase an external preamp. I've been looking at the m-audio octane which connects via adat lightpipe. If i connect like this will i still be able to control each individual channel with a fader on my board? Also, I would appreciate an explanation of what word clock and spdif are.

lightpipe is 8 channels, but what preamp will you be sending 8 channels through?
