Help w/ multiple mics through 1 DMP 3

Hey fellas I'm a total Noob just lookin' for a few pointers.

I was hoping to get a digital eight track and a DMP-3 based on what I've

learned through this site. I am just trying to get started off on the right foot

and at the moment I have no budget for a PC or mac. I was wondering how I

would route multiple drum mics through the DMP? Would I go through the

mixer on the eight track and then use the outs to go through the Dmp or do I

need to go through the mic pre first? If so what would I need and how do I

go about that? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What you would do is run the mics through the DMP3, and then to the inputs of your eight-track. The mics have to be preamped before they go into the recorder. You will only be able to run 2 mics throught the DMP3, as it is only a two channel preamp. If you want to preamp more mics, then you will need more preamps. A good way to do this is to get a small mixer, such as the Yamaha MG series. These will give you some more preamps, as well as give you a mixer that you can use for routing headphones, monitors, etc.

If you have any other questions, or if I just confused you further, just ask. :)

Connecting more than one mic to a channel is a bad idea anyway. The power would be split resulting in less gain for each mic. Plus the only way you'd be able to even out the signals would be mic placement.
