Help! Adat optcal 18 bit to adat optical 24 bit hard disc recorder

Hey all, I think I know the answer, but I need some guidance.

I have an 18 bitRec/20 Bit playback 'ADAT' (Panasonic MDA1) Recorder. (It's a Panasonic ADAT xt, really, but with better converters and xlr bal ins and outs)

I want to use it as an A-D/D-A Converter, NOT for playing a VHS master and transfering, but I want to use it simply as a converter. (I have two actually)

So if I go from it's existing ADAT optical out port on the Panasonic "adat-xt" (Toslink)
to my Mackie MDR2496, Hard disc recorder, which is also equipped with ADAT Optical in/out, WILL THE MACKIE RECOGNIZE THE INCOMING BIT DEPTH? The mackie is spec'd at 16bit or 24 bit, selectable. Is it enough simply to ensure 44.1k on both units, and let the Mackie figure it out? OR, DO I HAVE TO EMPLOY A DITHER TECHNIQUE (The panasonic does not seem to have a Dither option) (Actually, the Mackie is on the way, not at my fingertips yet)

Any help? Thanks so much, Dan, Monterey Peninsula, CA::guitar:
