can anybody please help a newbie with answering a couple of questions?

1: what is a headphone box?

2: what is it's purpose and what does it do?

Er.... is this a trick question?

Do you mean the box headphones come in or carrying box?
Maybe headphone amp?

Where did you read/heard such thing?

i think headphone amp. my interface has 2 head phone outs, one mirrors main outs and another can be assigned to any stereo outs. i was looking into how four musicians can each have there own headphones with there own mix while recording and was told i would need a headphone box. sorry for the confussion.

You can get a range of different kinds of headphone amp.

Some are one in - one out, usually for driving higher impedance cans or for great quality.
You get one in - many out and each out will have a volume knob. That's great if everyone wants to hear the same thing at different levels.
You also get ones with many ins and many outs meaning you can take stereo pairs from your interface to feed different headphone channels.

If your daw can+interface can do separate submixes then that's perfect for when every band member wants their part the loudest.
......but when does that ever happen? :p
