HD/IDE connection question

This is in reference to my DAW

I have 4 IDE slots, but 2 are RAID (MOBO MSI K7T266A Pro 2 )

Now I WILL NOT BE USING RAID, so I wanted to know this
If I connect it this way will it be ok

IDE 1-----------------------------------HD 1 (O.S., Software etc)

IDE 2-----------------------------------CDRW

IDE RAID (not activated for raid)--HD 2 (Audio only)

all using 80 pin ribbon

2nd option (If I cant use that t set-up)

IDE 1-----80pin ribbon split into-------HD 1 & CDRW

IDE 2 --------------------------------------HD 2

Go with option 2.

You may want to purchase a 3.5 to 5.25 inch adapter for you OS hard drive. Mount that in the middle 5.25 bays, have your CD-RW below, and your Audio Data drive in the top bay.

This way the cables will reach easily and no insane twisting involved. (all depends on your case design, but I'm picturing a standard ATX Case)

Or slave your CD-RW to your Audio drive on the secondary IDE channel. I've done this on many machines with no problems.

Option 2

Purchase 3.5 to 5.25 inch adapter for my O.S. HD ? WHY
(I have a Y shaped IDE cable: IDE to HD1 & CDRW 80 pin)

So you say
Audio HD2 in--------------- TOP BAY
O.S., Software HD1 in---- MIDDLE BAY
CDRW----------------------- BOTTOM BAY correct.

Make CDRW--secondary Master to my AUDIO HD 2--Primary Mast.
(Is that what your saying ?) I'm asking cause I'm not sure

But I understand you are saying stay away from the 2 RAID IDE's
(I was told I could use those IDE drives like regular IDE's long as I dont activate the RAID) -- is this not true

case can be viewed at: www.compute-aid.com the $118 model

Make the CDRW a slave on the Primary Master (operating system drive)

Quite possibly, check the motherboard manual

Rack case right? The reason I'd but the CD-RW below the primary master is so that the CD-RW connects to the grey connector on the ribbon, and the Hard Drive to the Black - without twisting the hell out of it trying to get it to reach.

Now that I see it's a rack case. You may run into a problem putting the CDRW in the bottom bay - being deeper than hard drives, it may bump into capacitors, DIMMS, depending on the motherboard layout and the depth of the rack.

If that is the case:

- Operating System Hard Drive, Top Bay, Primary Master.
- CD-RW, Middle Bay, Primary Slave.
- Audio Data Hard Drive, Secondary Master, Bottom Bay.

EMERIC, thanks again

thanks man, THAT really cleared things up

I was talking to some guys in www.tomshardware.com and they told me to use RAID slot, but the manual states, it can only be used if TWO HD are in the IDE slots.

but basically I wanted to stay away from it either way, I wont really be needing it.

THANKS
