Guitar compressors/FX?

So far im recording Mesa boogie cab with SM57, what rack mountable effects units are good for compression, would this be something that the sm57 would be plugged into before it reaches the soundcard, likea mic pre?

Any suggestions?

Something like that. Usually you'd have the mic go into a pre, then into compression, eq, effects, whatever.
