I need to get some good mics for recording my kit.. what is something good that Isn't gonna blow a hole in my wallet?
I hope to spend under $300, but if they are gonna be sucky mics, ill save to whatever i have to.

IMO, the following is a nice little starter drum mic package...

Kick... audio-technica ATM25
Snare... Shure SM57
Overheads... Marshall MXL603SPR (matched pair)

Or for a little more money...

Kick... AKG D112 or Sennheiser MD421
Snare... Beyer M201
Overheads... Oktava MC-012 (matched pair)

kick - AT ATMPRO25
snare - Shure sm57
overheads - pair of Marshall MXL603's or MXL990's

and to add, in addition to being great drum mics, those mentioned will work for many other applications also.....

Hi Gidge, hey which do you perfer (most of the time) as drum overheads... the MXL603S's or MXL990's and why?

It seems my 603's are a little hotter than my 990 and I seem to just like my 603's more than my 990 overall in general, well except for maybe on some guitar amps or vox. Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion about the two mic's. Thanks

Kick - Beyer M88 or Audix D4 or Peavey 520i or ATM25
Snare - SM57
Overheads - 2 Studio Projects B1's

This will give you a very nice drum sound.
