It's the HOOK. Ya gots to have da HOOK.......and that is the hardest thing to come by. Very good meter helps immensely as well. Lyrics-what a joke! Most pop music is filled with the most irrelevant, vapid, worthless, lyrics. The product of a plastic society I guess. So my conclusion: hook and meter and maybe not too much of a gratuitous display of superior musicianship. Solos are there for the song not the other way around.

I will enlighten you all as to what makes a song good........
Any song that rhymes and has something to do with cows is good.
But seriously, it's a very difficult question. But here is a wild guess at it:
Shoot, I just wrote about three things then changed my mind.
I think it has to have beauty in it to be a good song. The very best songs are the beautiful songs. Some really good songs are just fun and have a more earthly beauty. But the songs that have the unearthly beauty are the very best.
And I still think that cows help.

a song is good if you like it......you can't find a song anywhere that is not loved by some and hated by others

so, like i said, a song is good if you like it.
the ONLY other measurement of how good a song is would be the position on the charts and the total amount of money and/or fame that paticular song has generated for the publishers, writers, and artists..
