FX Loop?

I bought an amp without and FX loop. Is it worth it to have one installed?

Does the effects loop insert the effect signa between the pre and the power amp? Sorry if I am totally off.

Is it used mostly for rack mount gear, pedals or both.

What are the advantages of going directly inline or using the FX Loop?
 
Yes, the FX loop is pre out, power amp in. It changes weather the effect box is inserted in before the preamp or after. That will change your sound. For instance, if you set the gain high for distortion on your amp, would you like to phase shift the distortion or distort the phaser. The best thing to do is to try your effects both ways and see what you like.
 
I've put an eq. and compr. in the effects loop of my bass. Sounds OK, but is it OK? When is an effect plugged in the effects loop and when not?
