fw1884 as midi only controller

Hi:
I'm wondering if I can use my FW-1884 interface as a midi only controller for Cubase 5. It works fine with firewire, however, it runs on my mac with a 32 bit driver and I can't access all my ram that way. So, I bought an interface that does have a 64 bit driver, and I'm wondering-can I control the faders, etc., with the 1884 with midi connections only. I do have it hooked up, and there seems to be an indication that midi messages are getting through to cubase, as the midi indicator on the transport panel in cubase lights up when I move a fader on the FW-1884. The problem is that the faders in cubase do not move in response. I do have a midi cable running from my interface back to the FW-1884. I have set up the FW-1884 in the devices menu of the Cubase 5 project under Mackie control, and it works well as a firewire interface (the controls on the FW-1884 move the controls in Cubase) Any help in this matter would be appreciated.
