Frank Zappa Why is he so great?

Wait, Morrissey too?? The Smiths were legend, Viva Hate wasn't even that bad. You know Vini Reilly did uncredited guitar all over that, right?
You guys are killing me... This is the big one, Elizabeth! I'm coming to join ya!!!

I can't bear The Smiths or anything Morrissey has ever sang. He should be publicly beheaded for crimes against music. Just my opinion of course. I'd rather listen to Zappa.

Because we have similar taste on a lot of music I'm tempted to say you may have missed some of his gems...but then again maybe not.. Different strokes for different folks ..Zappa would not be insulted and would probably respect the fact that you "don't get him"..that just because "everybody" thinks he's great isn't going to influence your honest opinion. He hated commercialism of music and the way the masses were so easily maneuvered by the media money machine.

Yeah, from what I've read about him he'd probably encourage me to dislike his music. I find his career and what he achieved interesting and he deserves the praise. Sadly I just don't feel it.

So as not to make the same mistake as Clean; he is not musically pleasing to my ears ;)

I like what he did, I like what he was trying to do, I like that he was always pushing something and trying to original or at least true to his music. But I can't say I was always able to follow.

I can understand why he has such a high standing in modern music influence. I don't always have to like something to appreciate it.

I know who Frank Zappa is, I've heard a few of his songs. But I haven't really "listened". Franks music went right over my head.

I did like Dweezil's cover of My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama.

There are two albums that share some of the same actual tunes Apostrophe and One size fits all.

musicianship is stunning.... the musicians on this are all the at the top of their game....

For a song that I think most any musician can sort of tolerate and appreciate here's a fun one from said album

yes, if I could recommend just owning one zappa album it would be 'one size fits all' I own almost all of his albums on CD... that and hot rats are my 2 favourites.

The musicianship may be good but that song ^^^ does nothing for me. It's bland and boring. I listened twice, just to check.

Also one non-musical thing I really respect about Zappa is his role in all those PMRC hearings in the 80s.

I'm not trolling, promise.

Every time a thread goes over 200 posts, Frank Zappa seems to find his way into it. Maybe we need a Zappa thread.

You tell me, what is so great about Frank Zappa?

But honestly, why not just listen to a bunch and decide for yourself?
No one else can sell you on something you're closed off against, or turn you against something you like, and it's your own ears you have to satisfy.

Try this one:

Bizarre content/social commentary, interesting presentation, good musicianship and an amazing guitar solo. And recorded live. What more could you ask for?

I like the zappa song dina-mo-hum.
I have never been a huge fan though. Lowell George got kicked out of Zappas band for writing a song about smoking pot; "willin'"(thats the story according to Lowell George, but actually I think Zappa was more pushing him out of the nest to fly on his own than firing him).

He went on to form Little Feat....

So, I am grateful to zappa for making that happen since I'm a huge Little Feat fan

I guess it's geographic comedy " you'd need to be there" kind of thing ...San Bernardino is where Frank spent a portion of his life...it is an arm pit area of California but has it's highlights... like trailer park heaven...n Bobby who's head looks like a potato... a true potato headed whatchya ma call it

Frank also spent some time in Tank C on the notorious vice charge. This song is in large part a commemoration of that particular bit of not fun.
Frank's time in county was a huge part of the reason he was so against drugs in his band. He didn't want to be anywhere near them and risk jail time again.

In a world of lasers, flash pods, bar chords and baby, baby, baby lyrics, FZ was a breath of fresh air musically, lyrically and intellectually.

A truly honest, insightful and gifted artist that this world will never reproduce.

RIP, Frank.

Cheers! :)

Dunno. What did Frank say I was great at?

Now, some might have heard 'a Roger Daltrey capon' but you and me know better.

And yes, that's an interesting guitar solo. But it only works cuz the band is so behind it.
