Fostex R8 tape speed issues

I've got a fostex R8 that has been working great for me the last few years despite one drawback. When I first power up the machine, it plays back far slower than 15 IPS. I have to just let it play for about 5-10 minutes then it will suddenly catch and play at the correct speed and it continues to work just fine untill the next session. Not sure what to do about it. I'm thinking its maybe a motor issue or perhaps belt slippage?
Any input would be great, I'd really like to just fire it up and go without the wait.
 
Check and see if the capstan pull is slipping on the capstan shaft. Its a plastic pully and there is an issue with the M-80 and R8 with that pully slipping. Do a search and there is some info from awhile back.
